We understand shipping costs can sometimes seem high—especially for lightweight items like gum paste flowers. The primary reason is something called Dimensional Weight (DIM) Shipping, which is now standard practice for major carriers like FedEx and UPS.
Dimensional weight is a pricing method that calculates shipping costs based on the size (volume) of a package rather than its actual scale weight.
Because our gum paste flowers are lightweight but delicate, they must be shipped in larger protective boxes to ensure they arrive safely. While the contents may weigh very little, the package occupies more space on delivery trucks and aircraft—resulting in higher shipping costs under dimensional weight pricing.
Carriers charge shipping based on whichever is greater:
The actual weight of the package, or
The dimensional (volume-based) weight
Gum paste flowers are fragile and oversized relative to their weight
Protective packaging increases box size for safe delivery
Larger boxes = higher dimensional weight
Orders that include gum paste flowers and fondant may ship in separate boxes to prevent damage
This separation is intentional and helps ensure all items arrive in perfect condition.
Shipping carriers calculate dimensional weight using this formula:
Length × Width × Height (in inches) ÷ DIM factor
DIM factor:
166 for most U.S. ground shipments
139 for shipments to Canada
All measurements are rounded to the nearest whole inch. The final shipping charge is based on the greater of the dimensional weight or actual weight.
FedEx and UPS apply dimensional weight pricing so they can account for the space a package occupies on trucks and airplanes—not just how much it weighs. This policy helps carriers manage capacity for large, lightweight packages.
